Intergenerational education tools for adult educators

The digital handbook for adult educators with resources, activities and good practices of intergenerational education is online!

The first step towards a society where multigenerational diversity is a way to re-think the educational system, starts with practical tools to bring generations together in a safe, constructive and inclusive educational environment.

We present the Digital Manual of good practices in intergenerational education for adult educators working in multigenerational contexts, developed by the partners of the Erasmus plus KA2 project “Intergenerational Bridge: Connect To Create”, coordinated by the Italian lead partner EduVita.

WHY INTERGENERATIONAL EDUCATION

Demographic trends and research show that the generation gap is a constant challenge, especially in the world of education, where most educational opportunities are designed for younger generations. Studies show, in fact, that existing educational systems do not adequately reflect the needs of adult and older learners nor those of educators and professionals working in adult education.

The project “Intergenerational Bridge: Connect to Create” offers intergenerational education as an approach and solution to face this challenge and transform the gap between young and old into multigenerational wealth, through dialogue, exchange, communication and cooperative learning between people of different ages. The project idea starts from the daily experience of the Italian project leader and coordinator, the intergenerational centre EduVita, shared and developed by all partners.

A DIGITAL MANUAL FOR ADULT EDUCATION

The Digital Manual collects and summarizes the analysis and training carried out by the partner organisations from Italy, Lithuania, Poland, Czech Republic, Slovenia and Turkey in the period October 2020 – December 2022.  In particular, the manual is the result of the following activities:

  • The state of art analysis in 6 partner countries – to create common understanding regarding the definitions of different concepts related to intergenerational learning and the specific of IGL in different countries
  • Transnational experiences exchange in the Multigenerational centre in Jesenice, Slovenia – to share the experience in the sphere of intergenerational learning
  • Training for Adult educators on Intergenerational education and Emotional intelligence in Wroclaw, Poland – to develop the competences of elderly people educators
  • The collection of best practices in the field of intergenerational learning (elderly and young people) created and published on the website www.connectocreate.eu
  • Practices implemented and tested with local communities of learners and educators
  • Intergenerational learning activities are transformed to the workshops with guidelines for IGL educators

It is designed to support educators, social workers and professionals who intend to adopt intergenerational education in their professional practice in multigenerational contexts.

HOW TO USE THE DIGITAL HANDBOOK

The digital handbook is structured in 3 different sections:

  • Chapter 1 includes theoretical basics concerning the intergenerational learning (IGL) approach. This section will provide you with the basic information about intergenerational learning
  • Chapter 2 proposes two preparation workshops for the educators that would like to know more about Intergenerational education. Adult Education insitutions can organise these workshops in order to familiarise their staff with the use of Intergenerational learning approach in Adult education and multigenerational settings.
  • Chapter 3 includes 12 intergenerational activities. Each workshop presents a general overview, guidelines and tips for the educators. Workshops were tested with seniors and young people from 6 different countries. At least 20 older people (55+) and 10 younger people (16+) per each country attended the workshops. The presented set of activities can be used by senior citizens’ clubs, third age universities and other informal educational and therapeutic groups

The digital handbook is the result of the Erasmus+ KA2 project “Intergenerational Bridge: Connect To Create”, coordinated by EduVita (Italy), in partnership with Utena Third Age University (Lithuania), Ljudska Univerza Jesenice (Slovenia), Foundation Pro Scientia Publica (Poland), Nazilli Nazhayat (Turkey), and Právě teď ! o.p.s. (Czech Republic).
